I went to work today; nothing special happened. Scrambled to complete lab reports with lab mates during lunch. Got to lab and started so that I would complete quickly. Suddenly, Hurricane Andrew Part Deux begins outside the window, and everybody stops the lab to stare outside. The commuters start freakin out cuz we don't have our notes to study for the cell test if w're gonna be stuck on campus. We all start praying that it will be over before we finish lab. Thankfully, it is, and the sun never shone brighter than when I drove home today. I've got tons of studying to do for the Cell Biology test tomorrow. The class is from 11-12, but he decided to make the test from 10:30-12:30 and in the business school no less! Yes, craziness abounds, but once I take the test I can go home and begin the glory that is Spring Break.

Hello, everyone. I took my Psych test today and am confident that I totally aced it. At least I'm confident about something. I've got to work on my lab reports (they're already over 1/2 way done). I was so tired this morning that I decided to skip O Chem at 8 am. I had almost forgotten how nice the drive is to SMU at 9 am when all the school zones are no longer active. I texted one of my friends to pick up my test for me. The grade was still 65. I was hoping the online grade would conflict, but no chance. So now I'm faced with the decision of whether I should drop this class and take it somewhere else or keep on keeping on. A D in his class is a C, so I'm not technically failing, but I still don't want another C on my transcript. W definitely beats C anyday. If I dropped it, I would take it at a community college during Summer 2. I've got to figure something out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had two Diet Cokes with Lime for lunch, and I'm still nodding off as I read. I had to take a break to chat with y'all and unwind a little. Most people have the luxury of sleeping after working from 6:45 am to 6 pm, but I am not most people and have to put in more hours of study. Thus is the justice of life.

Today I watched The Mystery of Natalie Wood. As I've said before, West Side Story is my favorite movie, and I love Natalie Wood. She's always intrigued me. Her death is so tragic; I cried when the film reached that end. She was so beautiful but plagued with many inner demons. Sometimes I think if I could have been her friend I would have been there for her and supported her. The poor thing. Hi everybody. Today's my birthday! It is my 5th birthday, but I am turning 20 years old. I'm no longer a teenager; I'm a big girl now. I share a birthday with Antonio Sebato, Jr. (yum!) and Dennis Farina (yuk!). Nothing like a leap year birthday to make you think that God set aside a special day just for you to be born (as if that didn't sound egotistical). I celebrated with my family today by going to lunch at my favorite restaurant: Macaroni Grill. I know you're thinking, how can a chain restaurant be her favorite? Well the waiter we always have is a really nice Iranian guy, and he always makes sure everything is perfect for us at the table and in the kitchen. He makes it a special experience everytime we go and even sent us a slice of chocolate cake home for my birthday. Now I'm gearing up for Oscar watching and rooting for Shohreh Aghdashloo, the first Iranian ever nominated for an Oscar. This is such an exciting day!

Today was another threading day. I feel so clean after doing it, and it's a real confidence booster. I found out today that a bunch of my friends from school where 5 min. away from my house last night. This has left me with a huge feeling of regret that I did not ask before which restaurant they were going to. If I had asked that, I would have known they were going to be near me and we could have hung out. It's not easy to get together with my school friends because we all live so far apart from each other. And I was actually free last night; I had nothing to do! OK, I really need to stop kicking myself, but I know I would have had a blast. I guess the moral of this story is to be more nosy. :D I'm hoping another chance will come along; we'll see. I found out I got a 65 on the O Chem test. I'm really thinking of dropping this class and taking it at a community college. I don't need it for my major so I can take it anywhere. This totally bites. I missed a fun night and found out I'm stupid all in one day. Plus today's my last day as a teenager; tomorrow I turn 20. I guess the high-point of today was getting some baklava and a keyring with the Turkish evil eye (don't worry, Will, I'll show it to you). I'm heading to my regular mosque tonight; let the good times roll.

I went to The Cheesecake Factory today for lunch with a couple friends. It was sort of a mini-birthday party since my birthday's on Sunday. I was surprised when one of them handed me a card that had been signed my them as well as some other of my friends. It was so sweet of them. I really do have awesome friends. I really feel that I can trust them and that they'll care about me no matter what. While I was there I took some pictures with my phone. I went ahead and inputted the girls' email addresses so that I could send the pictures to them while we were still in the restaurant. Once I did that, I got picture phone crazy and started uploading a whole bunch of pictures. I then logged onto the Sprint PCS website and organized my pictures into albums and started emailing them all over the place. It was great because now I can take all the pictures I want without filling up my phone's memory as long as I upload them. And I can still see them on my phone when they're uploaded, so I can still retain portability. If any of y'all want me to email you some pictures, just let me know. It's so easy, and I can even send it to your cell phone. Whoever thought of this camera-in-the-phone thing was a genius!

My sister and I originally came up with "prizoner of science" when we were watching Nick and Jessica guest star on SNL. There was a skit involving a Mexican restaurant that doubled as a school for the performing arts, essentially the waiters were all singers paradying famous songs. Horatio Sanz comes out at one point and sings, "Do we have problem? I'm the manager. Prisoner of science. Science!" It's the funniest part of the movie. So we run around saying that to each other whenever there's awkward silence in the room as a sort of family joke. Little did I know that I misheard the lyrics. The name of the song is not "Prisoner of Science," but is in fact "She Blinded Me with Science" by Thomas Dolby. I like my made up lyrics better, but that's the origin of this now notorious name.

Hi everybody (Hi prettydoc!)...sorry, I've just always wanted to be Dr. Nick Riviera. Anywho, today was a long day which I blame on the 1/2 hr longer than class is scheduled O Chem lab today. We were doing Diels Alder Reactions: great on paper, SOBs in real life. Plus I burnt my finger on the MelTemp apparatus. Curse you and your hot metal! Well, before lab I was sitting with some commuter homies, and I realized something. See, they were talking about something that I can't relate to due to lack of experience of any kind: sex. Specifically, that as part of a relationship. It's strange how something like that can make you feel like sort of an outsider. I mean, I am in that regard. But it isn't just that I lack experience, it's that my view of it and its place in relationships is completely different from theirs. I'm not saying either view is better or worse than another; they're just different. Now I know that if I were to have made a contribution on the matter, which I didn't, there would not have been much for me to say. I would have just said, "What till you're married," and sounded like a prude or their mom. That's the last thing I want to sound like. I want to relate to my peers, but sometimes it just seems like we can be so different. I really do embrace differences. Maybe I'm not making any sense; in order to do that I may have to say the whole conversation, and I'm not going to do that. I've been in positions where I've alienated people because of this, and I don't want that to happen. But I'm not gonna pretend I know anything about it because I don't. Something tells me I should just keep my mouth shut. I was doing a really good job of that until it got to a topic where I thought I could relate and then I tried and realized I misunderstood and looked like a bigot or something and...oh to hell with it all! Who cares? Y'all probably already think I'm preachy enough as it is.

Tonight was the first time I had been to a real mosque in a while. The one I usually go to is not a really a mosque; it's an Islamic center. The biggest difference is that women don't have to wear scarves, and men and women are not separated. Of course, tonight I was at a real mosque so I had to abide by the real traditions. This required trying on lots of clothes until I found the one that was most conservative, meaning it had to signify that I don't care about clothes. Second, I had to find a good scarf. I picked the wrong one; it was so light that it kept slipping off my hair all night. When we got there I met up with a friend and her sister-in-law (who's younger than me! She's her bro's wife), and a friend from high school who I hadn't seen in a while. We were the only Iranians there; this mosque is meant for Pakistanis. We came because for a few nights they are having services in English, and the speaker was very good. He was quite knowledgable and lectured on some Islamic history. Great stuff, I really learned a lot. The only thing was that since it's a school night, it takes up time to drive there and wait for it to start. I might go again tomorrow, but we'll have to see.

Test went well, I'm glad to say. I love Diels-Alder Reactions! I'm so surprised that I took the test and actually knew what to do. Hopefully, it will turn out well, and I'll get a good grade. I found out I missed something funny while I was studying yesterday (curses!) and something surprising happened today (shockers!). Emotions abound. Had another dream, but it was very neutral. It was one of those dreams that just mirrors what you do everyday, like sitting in class. Nothing special. I'm glad, cuz I can't deal with all the drama in my unconscious. Reality's tough enough as it is. I got another paper that was due next week moved to after Spring Break! Yea! So next week I just have 2 tests. Woohoo!

All right! I showed up to TA today and she said I could go home since she already had a TA there. Yes! I went to my youngest sister's school to pick up the house key and my other sister's school to leave a note saying I would pick her up. I finally got home in time to catch the last 5 min. of Passions and get to studying for the big O Chem test tomorrow. Even though our class is one hour long, his tests are two hours long. He takes advantage of the fact that it's an 8am class by knowing for a fact that we don't have anything scheduled at 7 am. So that's when our tests are: from 7am-9am, even though the class is from 8-9. If that's not insanity, I don't know what is. This one guy I know came up today and told me that he had a dream that I cured cancer. That does it. Now I have to be a doctor; the Fates have dealt it. RANT STARTS NOW: Why do you always have to be so judgemental? Why can't you just stop being such a jerk? Why can't you just frickin' get out of my head so I can concentrate? Why are you so manipulative? And why the hell do I see your face when I read about Heathcliff??? END OF RANT. Much better. I'm slowly replacing this person's face with Johnny Depp's. He'd be a perfect Heathcliff. He won the Screen Actor's Guild award for Best Actor in Pirates. He's great. OK, everybody make sure to watch Whoopi and Happy Family tonight so that I have somebody to talk about tomorrow to take my mind off the test. That's your homework assignment tonight.

The only thing I can think of is...try not to think too much! Sometimes we tend to analyze things to a point of exhaustion, and it's not really worth it. We tire ourselves needlessly, especially if our strengths need to be used for studying for horrible O Chem tests. I got an email from my boss for TA saying that she needs me to come in tomorrow. I was planning on not going so that I could study for the Chem test. She doesn't think anybody else will come. I don't know if I should blow it off or come in. Ah, complicated! In other news, yesterday I went to the memorial for the boy who died on Tuesday. It was very sad and intense. His friends all came and shared their memories. His bro who was driving the car also said a few words. It is such a tragedy. I'm sort of afraid to drive because of it, but I'm just trying to be extra careful. Everybody be careful out there. We live in a scary world.

"That girl was a one-time teenage drama queen, now she's a somebody!" I just saw Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. I LOVE movies where there is singing and/or dancing. This had both. Tween movies are so much fun. It's great to just forget about everything for a while and just have fun. They even talked about Wuthering Heights in the movie! "This is just like Heathcliff running through the moors." I finished my WH reading assignment and wrote my paper about why Catherine should have married Heathcliff. I like this book now; I'm getting to the juicy stuff. I'm up to Ch.3 of Book 2. Now that this English stuff is out of the way I can concentrate on O Chem. Last night I dreamt about this guy I know. It was kind of a racy dream. It's so weird to have dreams like that about people that you know would never act that way with you. Who knows what's in my unconscious?

I feel so overwhelmed with school work. Today I spent 4 hours pouring over IR and NMR spectra trying to identify my unknown. I solved my solid unknown in an hour, but I still haven't IDed my liquid. I think it's CCCCCOOH, but it doesn't match the spectra. My molecular weight is too large, and I have too many hydrogens. This is so frustrating! What the hell is this goddam compound!! Someone I know died today. He was in 8th grade and his brother was in 11th. His brother was driving him to school this morning at 80 mph when he lost control and hit a large cable box on the passenger side. The younger brother died on impact and the older one is in the hospital. I've known these boys since I was in 7th grade, about the same age as this boy when he died and the same age as my sister who went to school with him. Each of my sisters goes to school with each of these brothers, actually. They're Persians, which is significant in the fact that it means that I would see them much more than if they were casual acquaintances at my sister's schools. It adds a new dimension to the tragedy. I can think of so many stories about them, and I keep seeing the little one's face as he grew older these past 7 years, yet retained his innocence. I know his brother will feel guilty the rest of his life for what happened. May God bless him and his family in this sad time.

So I took my English test where we're given 6 excerpts from texts we've read and have to write about 4 of them in one hour. I wrote about William Blake's The Chimney Sweeper from Songs of Innocence, Mary Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Women, John Keats's Ode to a Nightingale, and William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. They're all great reads; I love Romanticism. We're moving on now to Victorianism. It's my other specialty, but my heart really is rooted in Romanticism, both generations of it. If you want social commentary, go to the first generation, but if you want escapism, go to the second generation. Second generation Romantics were often intrigued by the Middle East, seeing it as exotic a la Arabian Nights. There was even a poem modeled after that story, Thomas Moore's Lalla Rookh. Of course, we never read about that part of Romanticism in my course. It's very Euro-centric. My school says that they have a course on Persian poetry, but they won't give me a course name/number for it. Sounds a little fishy to me.

I went to a luncheon today. It was thrown by this woman whose husband just back from his pilgrimage to Mecca. Therefore, there was a lot of primping being done at my house. It's so funny how us girls run around like chickens with our heads cut off while my dad just puts on a suit and watches CNN. I had rollers in my hair, while blowdrying and putting on makeup at the same time. Plus I was taking off and putting on so many clothes carefully so as not to upset the rollers. In our culture, appearance is everything. A family is often judged by the beauty of its daughters. That's why when I arrived at the luncheon, I was not surprised to see that the college-age girls (who all go to community college for what it's worth, btw) had nose jobs recently done. It seems that everytime I go to one of these things somebody's had something done. People who say hi to me will often examine my face to see if there's been a change and look relieved that I'm the same person. I've never changed my hair or my face. The only alterations I've ever made to my appearance is color contacts (they're very natural and tasteful, most people don't even notice) and makeup (also pretty low-key). My hair is the same color it was 20 years ago in 2 weeks, the night I was born in Bristol. The only primping I do is curling/blowdrying my hair, setting my clothes and accessories, and doing my own makeup. I'm a simple girl with simple tastes.

I saw the Princess Diaries tonight on TV. It's such a nice movie. I sort of identify with it on a special level, considering I found out that I'm a princess a year after I saw it for the first time in theaters. Anne Hathaway is even the actress I look the most like. I admit that I was a little surprised when I found out, but at least I knew that I didn't have the kind of responsibilities that Princess Mia has in the film. I guess that's the perk of being a princess of a fallen dynasty: you get the title, but you don't do anything with it. Although having the title does sometimes make me think I should be a better role model and live up to the expectations and legacy of my ancestors. Of course, if I was the princess I was meant to be, I would probably live in a harem like this one and I'd definitely have at least 5 kids by now. It's a trade-off, but my heritage does make me want to learn as much as I can about my family's past. It's one of the biggest motivators I've ever had.

Today was the first snowfall of winter. Those of you up north may be rolling your eyes, but it's a big deal in Dallas. Instead of a white Christmas, we got a white Valentine's Day. I think it's actually more romantic when the weather is this way. I went for a long walk outside and just marveled at the white trees. It looked like something out of Dr. Zhivago or, as my mom said, a "carte postale." It really was beautiful. I've been reading a lot of Romantic poetry lately centering on nature (my test is Monday), so I felt particularly inspired. I went to Sam Moon for the first time. It was packed. My favorite bags were the ones with celebrities on them. I really like the Audrey Hepburn Roman Holiday, Beatles performing, Friends cast in the picture frame, and the Elle magazine cover. The lead article was "Do gentlemen really prefer blondes (and fake tans and long nails)?" It was totally awesome and speaks volumes to me. My sisters and dad picked up Krispy Kreme, so I'm enjoying that with some hot tea and cocoa. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

OK, I'm really getting in a pissy mood. I don't particularly like myself when I get like this, but oh well. My grades, relationships, and social issues are sort of coming apart in my mind. I'm beginning to blame the holidays. There's nothing like Valentine's Day to make you feel pathetic. But think of it this way: Women outnumber men 4 to 1. Of the 75% of women left 25% are lesbians. Therefore, at least 50% of women are alone this Valentine's Day. I was wondering something else. I went to the 9am Psych class so that I could get out of class at 1 instead of 3 today. He ended class at 9:30 so I had breakfast in the lounge and chatted. Then those people left and a couple more people came in and I chatted. Then I headed off to play pool and I wasn't particularly good at it. I'd never heard of "cutthroat" style before; it made me think of pirates. I usually just take turns hitting the ball until the black one goes in to end the game. None of this "you're in or out" business. So, disappointed in my ability, I returned to the safe haven of the lounge, which was packed. It was weird, cuz when I left it was empty. So I hung in there and had a really nice time. I even saw some people I hadn't seen since last term b/c of scheduling conflicts. Then I headed off to class to talk about "Ode on a Grecian Urn." OK, this is the 6th time I've studied this poem; the last time I did was 2 wks ago in another English class. Can we please read something new? I'm always shocked when there are people in the class who haven't read it before (although there was no more than 3, mind you). How could you have avoided reading this poem? It's always thrown in my face. So I picked up Baker Bros. Texas Cobb salad on my way home. I swear, they have the only salads that will fill me up cuz they're just so freakin huge! No wonder they were voted Best Big Salad by the Dallas Observer.

Wow, the readership of our little blog circle is growing. Who'd a thunk it. Today was a boring day a work with a lot of downtime. My coworker didn't show up for work (I think she overslept), but it didn't really affect me since I was working with a different doctor. All I had to do in lab today was pick up a couple spectra for my unknowns. I have to identify them by Thursday. We aren't given a list to pick from, just the Aldrich catalog, which lists all chemical compounds on the planet. Thanks a lot. I have a lot of free time tomorrow, so I'm hoping to play some pool. I haven't played in, like, a year. I may be rusty, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Remember that Cell Bio test I thought I aced? Well, I got a 70. Couldn't be farther from acing. The weather totally blew this morning so I got to O Chem 20 min late. I found out that my 10 and 11 am classes are canceled on Friday. That means I'll be free from 9-12 that day. Maybe I can use that time to play pool with Diego. I might even get Krispy Kreme for the lounge. Key word: might. When I was in my Brit Authors 2 class, Prof Newman wrote "cockney" on the board and said that it reminded her of the Beatles, although it was used incorrectly b/c they were from Liverpool not London. Then Prof Bozorth suggested that Davy Jones of the Monkees would be a better example of cockney. I fought the urge to jump up in the middle of class and say, "Davy Jones is from Manchester, not London! A better example of cockney is Eliza Dolittle (Audrey Hepburn) in My Fair Lady." I knew if I did, not only would I sound like a smartass, but I'd have to explain that I'm from Bristol, etc. Then they would ask why I don't have an accent and by the time I finished explaining my life story, class would be over. Bozorth was very proud of his connection, but Newman said, "If you don't know who the Monkees are, don't worry. You're not missing anything." It was like she stomped on my heart! I love The Monkees, especially Davy Jones. I've been a huge fan ever since I was 13. I know that sounds a little unbelievable coming from a 20 year old, but it's true. Then I hung out in the lounge, where I had a blast. It was a lot better than Monday, thanks to Diego shushing the nonstop talking guy. Then I went to Developmental Psych and learned about Sexual Maturation. I know, too much info. Well, I had to pick up my sister from school today b/c my mom had to go to this thing all afternoon. So I braved the crappy rain all the way to Plano, picked her up, and when I got home I realized that neither of us have a key. So I waited for the bus to drop off my other sister, and she didn't have a key either. So we stayed in the car in the driveway for 3 hrs doing homework. Well, they did homework, I slept after beating myself up about what an idiot I am. Then when my mom got home and finally let us in from the cold, she gave me a talking to. I admit that I deserved it, but I had already beaten myself up enough. I do to myself what no one could ever do to me. Luckily, my mom had already made her world-famous lasagne that morning (best white sauce ever!), so we enjoyed that while watching Smallville. After that, we watched The OC (first new episode in 3 weeks). The best part was when Seth was introducing Summer to the wonderful world of comic books. In case you didn't know, comic books are another passion of mine, esp. DC. Well, he said all comic enthusiasts must read "The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, and The Sandman." OK, I have the Dark Knight Returns, and Watchmen and Sandman (Midsummer Night's Dream one) have been on my wish list since July. Then Seth, Anna, and Summer were watching Batman: The Animated Series and the episode they were watching was "Girl's Night Out," the one where Batgirl and Supergirl team up cuz Batman and Superman are out of town or something. Get this: I have that episode on tape! Can you believe this? It's like this show has been following me around on my odyssey to become a comic book afficionado and chronicled it's rise just for me. How cool is that?! Next thing you know, they're gonna watch Justice League and Lois and Clark. I can't believe I got to revel in 2 of my greatest passions in one day! If only it didn't have to be on the same day as 2 of my greatest downers.

OK, so now I have an imposter on my hands. That's just great. I hope it's not the suspicious guy I mentioned yesterday. The last thing I need is getting him involved in this. I was with the nice doctor this morning (yea!) and finished work in a timely manner. When I got to the school the Airline Garage was full (as usual), so for the first time ever, I parked in the Commuter Lot. I drive my coworker to school too after work (she's a senior at SMU) and when I drove up to the lot I said, "Oh look, there's Will bike." So she asked, "Who's Will?" and I said, "Oh, nobody. You don't want to know him." She was perfectly content with my answer. :p

OMG, there's this guy in the lounge that will not stop talking. He just goes on and on and on and on and won't stop. Even when everyone tells him that everything he's saying is garbage, he keeps talking. Today, he busted out a mini radio controlled race car. OK, this guy's a college senior. It's a little rediculous to see him get excited about this thing. Oh and I meant mini as in miniature, not mini cooper. It was actually a toy hummer.

Wow. I just wasted 3 1/2 hrs of my life watching the Grammys. Worst of all, I could have spent that time studying for my Cell Bio test tomorrow. I have a feeling this will haunt me tomorrow. I think since I did well on his online quiz I lulled myself into a false sense of security. Hopefully tomorrow's test will go well, and I can laugh at my paranoia. Heh...heh...heh

I was just thinking about the various loves and losses we all undergo by the time we're 20. We know we're not going to marry any of the people that we like, but they nevertheless consume our thoughts. When I like a guy, he's often all I can think about. He becomes the focus of all my energy, thereby making my other relationships and responsibilities suffer. I'm currently not crushing on anybody, but I just keep thinking what if someone new does come into my life. Will he wind up taking all my time, energy, and thoughts when I know that he is not doing the same? Will I be sad, will he make me cry and will that be worth the thrill that enters my heart when I catch a glimpse of him?

I just got back from threading. I went to a new place this time which charged only $15! I was paying $30 before. Plus this lady was faster and less painful. She was great! It was in an Indian neighborhood so we checked out some of the neighboring stores. We went into this bakery, but had no clue what the cashier was saying. We picked up some coconut macaroons, but we're still not sure how that happened. For some reason there was a pool table in the bakery. Hmm...

I just finished reading "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." It's so much better now than it was when I read it in 10th grade. There's so much intrigue and sexual innuendo. I love it! The masculine stuff (fighting, gutting animals) is just as boring as it ever was, but overall I liked it. I then read some Coleridge. I can't stand him, no wonder Wordsworth stopped being friends with him. Wordsworth is so much better; he's a total genius and obviously the brains of the operation. Coleridge was probably someone just to get high with. So that brings me to my current state of studying for Cell Biology. While I do that, I invite you all to check out Diego's blog. It's brand spanking new and I love it already. Since he put my name first and is using Blogger, I'm taking credit for his conversion to blogism before Will and Ben have chance. HaHa! I still want to guess who his crush is; I really like Peanut M&M's.

My Psych test was totally unbelievably easy. It was 50 ?'s MC and I finished in 20 min. I'm glad I'll have aced some test this month. My next test is Cell Biology on Monday. Hopefully, I'll get my act together for that testa and it will be more like Psych than O Chem. It is also 50 ?'s MC, so hopefully that's a good sign.

I've come to the conclusion that I should stop thinking inappropriate thoughts aloud. I just keep saying this stuff in the lounge that is just plain wrong and only the few girls present think is funny. The guys are just freaked out. I think I'm just so normal looking that they don't expect that my sexual innuendo can outdo theirs. Or maybe I'm just plain weird...

Diego's my newest reader, which is totally awesome. His car is such a chick magnet. My car is, well, not. I drive a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant. It's website actually says, "Just because you're married with kids doesn't mean you're too old to have a nice car." That means I'm driving a mom-mobile. Diego's got a Mini Cooper, though, which is so tyte and reminds me of "The Italian Job." I like watching my readership grow. It's an English major's dream to be read. On a sad note, I got a 60 on the above O Chem test. Yuck! I went to all those help sessions, too! I have to find a way to ace this class fast. I know there's a secret to it; I just have to find out what it is. I'm not gonna let it get to me right now, though. I have a Psych test tomorrow, Cell Bio on Monday, and an English paper due Wed. Busy, busy, busy! Oh, and remember, the vagina is a dangerous environment.

I took my first Organic Chemistry test today. Basically I knew 4 out of 6 pages really well, while the other 2 pages I'm shaky on. I really hope I did well. I studied so hard I didn't even post about it on here. Well, tomorrow I turn in my first set of lab reports. It wasn't until a braved the nasty, nasty rain and cold to make it home in one piece that I got on the lab site to see that there was a lab review help session today at 6. I know that's 2 hrs. away but it's so not worth it to spend an hr. going back to campus for this. If I had known about it before I would have planned to stay on campus for it. What happened to announcing these things through email or in lecture? I'm already going to a help session tomorrow at 6pm though. That means I'll miss Friends! Don't worry; I'll set my VCR. Hopefully, I make it back in time for the "corporate reshuffling" on The Apprentice. The Donald rox!

Hey, everybody. This week is gonna be totally crammed with three tests and two papers, plus lab reports and reading assignments. I'm hoping to get an extension on a paper due next week, so we'll see how that goes.

The last couple of days have been really busy, too. Thursday, the doctor I work for called me a failure, while one of the patients called me "pretty" three times. Then I had to give her a rectal exam. Maybe I should change my name to prettyfailure. I couldn't find a parking space when I got to school, so I went to Central Market and got a lasagne and Greek pasta salad, then went to Krispy Kreme and got a Lemon-filled doughnut (they didn't have the hot glazed at the time). When I got back to school, I was exhausted, delirious, and starving. When I walked into the lounge, I was surprised to find my arch nemesis from TA last semester, the student I talked about a while ago who would hit on me in class and hassle me. Well, he was there and hopped up on energy drinks. Of course, Will was there and ready to tell me that buying one doughnut was "a crime against humanity." I couldn't think of a witty comeback so I told him to shut up (clever, huh?). When I opened my lasagne, it came tumbling out onto the floor. I dove and grabbed it and decided to take of the layer that touched the floor when Will advised me that "nuking it kills germs." I hit rock bottom and proceeded to have a mini-breakdown as I told the gang how I had been up since 5:30, working since 6:30, called a failure, given a rectal, couldn't find parking, and couldn't get a hot glazed doughnut. The girls gave me a pep talk that boosted my spirits enough to microwave the lasagne, and Daphne handed me a Pepsi (in my haze, I had neglected to get a drink). Finally I sat down and engulfed the feast before me, yet did not have room for the doughnut, before I had to go to lab. Will prompted me to eat it, yet I would not give in. I saved it for after lab while I hung around waiting for the Organic Chemistry help session to start and left school at six, getting home at 6:45. My 13 hr day had finally come to an end.

I actually got to do some real TAing today as it was the first lab of the new term. There's this Persian guy in the class who kind of hassled me a bit. I was like, great, a term full of being disrespected by yet another boy. He got a 0 on his quiz, though. It was weird cuz this Iranian guy was trying to get me to eat lunch with him when I went to the caf to get lunch and last semester one of my students was an Iranian guy who was rude to me. It seems like they just won't leave me alone. I never approach them, they just come to me.

I just watched the Golden Globes tonight. It was pretty boring, and I wasn't a big fan of the winners. I only liked Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger. Hopefully the Oscars will be more entertaining. The Oscar noms come out on Tuesday, the same day as the New Hampshire primary. Hmmm, I know that's supposed to be deep on some level...

My sister took her SAT today and thinks she did pretty well. She already knows what college she wants to go to, and she actually took the SAT there today. While she was taking the test, my mom and I had breakfast at Denny's where I surprisingly found hairs in my paincakes. They were actually baked into the batter. It was so disgusting that I lost my appetite. I have a lot of things due the first week of February, so I'm trying to get as much done now as I can. I've completed my lab report and hopefully I'll finish my English paraphrase and paper before Friday. I want to devote the weekend of 01/31-02/01 to studying for the O Chem test that Wednesday and the Cell Bio and Psyc tests that Friday. That means staying on top of things now so that I don't get overwhelmed.

Will got a haircut today, or rather I saw his haircut for the first time today. That's all I have to say about that (j/k). In other news, I was the last person to leave lab today because I messed up multiple times, but I aced the quiz and totally rocked at work in the morning. I'd write more, but I'm really sleepy and want to gather enough strength to get through Friday so I relax this weekend.

Will's blog entry for today "weighs in" (HAHA!) on the whole diet thing. It's nice to know that for once I'm influencing him instead of the other way around. And he says girls are stupid... I had my New Majors meeting yesterday, which was a complete waste of time. Basically I was given my Degree Progress Report and told what an advisor was and how many credits are needed to graduate, etc. I already knew those things before I matriculated, yet somehow it got stretched into an hour lecture. I went to an Organic Chemistry help session, which was great! I really want to make a point of going to as many as I can. I met with my study group today, but only 2 of us (me included!) had done the homework so we disbanded and agreed to meet at Starbucks on Sunday. Well, I'm off to prelab for the first O Chem lab of 2004.

Also, tonight on Average Joe 2 Hawaii the hunks arrive to spice things up. Does anyone else think it's weird that there are more hunks than Joes? Based on numbers alone, it seems likely that she would pick the hunks. Watching today's Oprah further motivated me on my new path to fitness. I've been doing Pilates everyday since the New Year and am on the Chick-fil-a diet on school days. It includes alternating each day between the Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich, Chargrilled Chicken Cool Wrap, Spicy Chicken Cool Wrap, and the Chargrilled Chicken Salad, with Fat Free Honey Mustard Dressing on all of them and lemonade instead of soft drinks. That's less than 7 grams of fat each! I think it's a good plan. I chose Chick-fil-a because at my school we only have Chick-fil-a, Bene's Pizza, and Montague's Deli, so I don't have that many options. I would eat a turkey sandwich everyday, but turkey makes me sleepy. I'm very sensitive to chemicals. If I have a Coke at lunch, I can't sleep at night. And that's it for Diet Tips from Prettydoc!

I was always raised to stay away from sugar substitutes and still have my mother's mantra (Nutrasweet causes cancer!) drumming in my head. Although the saccharine tests done on mice may seem nonvalid today, I have spoken to people who ran similar experiments and indeed felt that it causes cancer. They stopped using sugar subs and warned their friends not to use them. I have a feeling that Splenda may not be as bad as aspartame or saccharine because it's made from sugar, but I really don't know much about it. I think the chicken scare is rediculous. At the hospital, I saw a patient that died last month from arsenic poisoning, and the doctors said that it is a very rare thing. So rare, that the only way you could get arsenic poisoing if you were deliberately poisoned, as the police suspect she was. The iron thing is also lame. Too much iron is only harmful to children under 6. It's great for everybody else. Something to watch out for, however, is mercury from fish. There are certain kinds of fish (swordfish, trout, shark) that have high levels of mercury. They are the kinds of fish that are predators when they are alive. Don't eat these kinds of fish more than once a month for women or twice a month for men. Hope that helps.

Yea, Will's blog is back online! Only now I can't leave comments. Oh, the frustration! Moving right along, I'm really liking school this semester, especially my Cell Biology teacher. He's so awesome! He's really making me like biology all over again, which is great because my Genetics teachers made me sort of hate it. It's not good to hate your major. I got to work 1/2 hr. early this morning without even knowing it. I got there at 6:30 am, and the doctor showed up at 7 am surprised to see me there so early. He told me how weekends have later hours. So now I know to give myself an extra 1/2 hr of sleep tonight.

All right! Now we're back on track.

I went to work this morning, then headed for school. I got there at 12:30 pm and didn't have class (Organic Chemistry Lab) until 2 pm. I got the Chick-fil-a Chargrilled Chicken Salad, which is now in a small round container instead of the old long rectangular one. It took me an hour to eat because it was so hard to mix and get to anything. Everybody was either laughing at me or trying to defend me by saying that I'm a neat eater. Then they gave me tips on how to eat a fast food salad the right way. I don't get why I can't do things girls are supposed to be able to do. I can eat a 1 lb. burger and fries without breaking a sweat, but I can't eat a salad in under an hour?! In other news, the lounge was pretty empty today. What happened to the crazy college Thursdays filled with random, witty banter? Oh yeah, Will wasn't there. :p So my inability to eat salads and speeding were the main topics of discussion. Pretty boring stuff. Plus I had to sit through it for 1 1/2 hours and then my lab was only 10 min. long! It was such a waste of time. I could have been studying or something. The salad didn't fill me up, so when I picked up my sister from school I swung by McDonald's and got a McChicken sandwich. It totally went against my Chick-fil-a diet, but who cares. I'm hungry dammit!

Will, get your site back up. I need your blog fix! Anyway, I completed by first assignment of the term today. It was a Commentary about William Blake's "The Lamb." Blake is my favorite poet, and I've already studied this poem in two classes before. It makes writing about it much easier than if it was new to me, that's for sure. One of the girls from work called because she didn't realize she had a class Thursday mornings. That means that now I have to work every Tuesday and Thursday morning. I'm giving her my weekends though, but I still have to work this one. That means I'm working 4 days this week and going to school. Ahh, a premed's work is never done...

Today was my first day of working at the hospital during this school term and the first Tuesday I've been on campus since last May. I liked seeing the people I missed yesterday and the general lounge talk. We tossed a few pop culture references around the room with a couple "Who/What's that?" that made me cringe. I just don't like explaining that kind of stuff. It's like having someone ask you, "Who's Elvis?". How can you expain that in less than 30 seconds? I expected the class that I TA to be really short today and it was...for the students. The TAs had to stay an extra hour. I spent it writing all the students' names in the grade book. Busywork alert! All I could think about was how my feet and back hurt from working that morning and how I wanted to go home. Well, now I'm here and ready to read some Romantic poetry before Gilmore Girls starts.

Today was my first day of the term. I got up early, took a shower, did my hair, and looked fabulous. I got to school full of confidence, and it felt great to see all my friends again. They've been to so many places during the break, like Macedonia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. I got show off my phone a little bit. The girls loved my Ashton pic and the guys loved my Shakira pic. I'm an equal opportunity entertainer. My Cell Bio teacher seems really cool; I love him already. My first English class looks laid-back, but my second one has a lot of writing assignments that I'll need to keep up with. I'm going to feel out the Psyc class this week. If it seems like I'll get an A, I'll stick with it otherwise I'll drop it before Friday so it won't show up on my transcript.

Tomorrow's the big day: the start of the Spring 2004 term, just in case some of you forgot (cough, Will, cough). Today I was in a bit of mood and feeling very insecure about myself and tomorrow. It took some Pilates, hair styling, and motherly advice to snap out of it and see that I'm in control of my destiny (could I be more vague?). I'm excited, but nervous at the same time. There's a lot riding on this semester, gradewise, workwise, and socialwise. So far this is my schedule:

8 am Organic Chemistry 2
10 am Contemporary Approaches to Literature
11 am Cell Biology
12 pm British Authors 2
2 pm Developmental Psychology

Tuesdays

6:45 am Work at the hospital
1 pm TA for General Chemistry Lab 2

Thursdays

6:45 Work at the hospital (every other Thurs.)
2 pm Organic Chemistry Lab 2

Weekends

6:45 Work at hospital (every third weekend)

Looks pretty busy, huh? I might drop Psyc this week if it turns out to be too much. But I think I can handle it. I have to have as many A's as possible this semester and kick a$$ at work. It's all part of my master plan to become the prettiest doctor in the world. :)

I went threading today. I had been looking for someone who would thread at a lower price, but so far no luck. So I gave in and went to the same salon as last time. Since my mom did it with me I saved $5. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but it's a start. I wanted to look nice and clean when school starts Monday. I'm excited about seeing all my friends and taking some fun classes. I'm still trying to decide what to wear. I got a letter today from my school about having a New Majors meeting. See, your major is not officially declared until you attend this meeting. I'm scheduling mine January 20th at 2pm. The only reason I can attend is because the class I TA will not be held that week. Talk about luck.

I went to the mall after work today with a friend from school (the one who drove me to that party I mentioned before). OK, never mix being up since 5:30, doing hospital rounds till noon, and walking around the mall till 4:30, especially when there's no caffeine involved, just <5 hrs of sleep. I brought it upon myself; I'm such a people-pleaser. In the end I got nothing, but my friend got a nice pair of boots. School starts Monday, so this is my last weekend of freedom. For the next 4 months, my weekends will leave me occupied with a certain Mr. L.G. Wade. Thank God for the English classes to preserve my sanity and love of culture.

i sleep like 5 hours a night, and am fine with it. i would assume you'd want to start getting in the habit too (w/o being dependent on caffeine), med school is only around the corner.

Ah, if only I could have titles on my entrys like my blog buddies. Oh well, I can still dream. I've been working afternoons all week and tomorrow I start my morning shifts again and will continue them for the rest of the school year. I like mornings better. I clearly work from 6:45 am - 12pm and have the sole responsibility of making hospital notes. Afternoons have ambiguous endings (sometime after 5...) and include preops, postops, consults, transcription, and intake. Of course the downside is mornings require running around three buildings of the hospital with a laptop, printer, and a big cart holding it all together. I really need to work out more.

OK, the schedule change went through great, but now I'm having problems with the financial aid department. That's what happens when go to the most expensive school in TX; all they care about is money. It's crazy how they have no problem sending you emails and letters about lack of payments, etc. but they don't even leave a phone number where you can contact them in order to make the payments!

I went to my school bookstore yesterday. When I compared the books for 2 sections of my English class, I realized that none of them matched the ones they put online. I also found that I liked the books from the other teacher's class better than my own, so I decided to change my prof. Luckily she has one seat left in her class. If I change that, then I would change Intro to Cultural Anthropology to Developmental Psychology. There's no way I'm taking classes from 8am to 1 pm w/o a break. So now I'm awaiting my advisor's reply to my email of change.

developmental psychology is the class that changed my major to psychology. hopefully you have half as good a professor as i did. actually, it was child and adolescent psychology... basically the same thing.

psychology is lame. who in the right mind would want to study the way ppl think. ick, that wreaks of lameness. why don't you think about changing your gpa to a hard science like physics or biochem, so if you screw up your BCPM gpa with a hmm...c+ in genetics , you have like tons of other classes to fall back on that are way easier upper-div.

Actually, I'm a double major in Biology and English. Next term (Spring 04), I'm taking O Chem 2, Cell Biology, 2 English classes, and Psyc. Plus, over the summer I'm taking some easy Bio classes at a community college to bring up my science GPA.

So? Her gpa at school won't change, but thats only because the class transfers for credit, but on come to application time, she has to put in the grade for the class on amcas...

Well said, persianguy. You see, Will, when you apply to med school your application and subsequent GPA includes all college classes regardless of where taken. So even though SMU doesn't recognize them, CC classes will be calculated in my GPA and Science GPA. That's the GPA the med schools use for admissions.

Last night a dreamt that a certain someone was in my house while I was the only one at home. We spent the afternoon watching TV while I sat anxiously wondering what my mom would say when she got home. When she did get home, I ran up to meet her and the first thing she said was, "Well, is he cute?". I explained to her who he was and that we were only watching TV. Then she said, "That's okay. You're grown up now, but I'd rather you did not bring him in the house until I had met him first." OK, this moment of deep understanding must of shattered my universe because I woke up right when she said that.

The funny thing about my dreams is that I'm just as self-restricting in them as I am in real life. You'd think I would have done more with this guy than watch TV. We could have gone to the movies, had lunch, or even flown around the world (it's a dream, remember). There would have been absolutely no consequences for my actions. Talk about frustration.

OK, I just got back from Houston. The goal of this trip was to the see Heroic Age exhibit at the Museum of Fine Art. It wasn't as great as I had expected. I loved seeing the famous things like Starry Night and the Picassos. A lot of the rest of the art was a little extreme for me. I like Pop Art, Surrealism, and Pointillism, but I'm not much of a fan of American abstract. But after we saw the exhibit, we went to another floor of the museum and saw what it usually houses. The works were beautiful! They were full of religious and mythological imagery from the Renaissance and Middle Ages and tons from the Romantics. As far as Houston, I really liked seeing the Texas Medical Center, Rice University, and UT-Houston Med School up close. For some reason, I couldn't find Baylor Med School, which is supposed to be in the same place. Yesterday was the first day of the light rail service, and it looked pretty nice. I always heard that the worst part of TMC was the parking, so if I go to Houston for med school I would love to be able to park and ride.
