First Interview Invite

I just got my first invitation to interview and it's from UT Houston!!! I can't believe I got this and it's at a school that I really want to go to. I'm so excited!! Today was my first day of class too and it went really well. My health psyc prof was out of town, so he videotaped the lecture and we watched it during class! I'd rather we just didn't have class so I could meet up with friends. Oh who cares? I got a med school interview!!!!

Thats good news marium. Our prayers are with you in successfully shocking the interviewers! I was just wondering, what gpa does UT houston requires in undergrad, I couldnt find it on their web. cuz I am also thinking to apply to med schools in USA, but I have not much details of the criteria. Anyways, you will succeed, inshAllah.

Congrats on the interview! I remember those days of flying across the country interviewing for med school and know what you are about to go through. Good luck!

Omair, I would advise not applying to the TX med schools, as they are all required to take 90% TX residents. Your best bet would be Baylor Med (also in Houston) which takes 70% TX resident. According to the MSAR, UT Houston's median overall GPA is 3.65 and median science GPA is 3.58. The median MCAT score is a 10 in each section and an O in the writing sample. They did take 2 international students last year, so you never know.

thanks a lot! what is MSAR? sorry for arrogance, I dont know what secondaries mean either. I mean USA spplication system is so different from Canada's that i just get lost when i read about TMSAS. you might help?

MSAR is the Medical School Admission Requirements, a book published every year by the AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges, which includes US and Canadian schools). The med school app system is the same for US and Canada, both countries use AMCAS, American Medical College Application Service, as the primary application. TMDSAS is the primary application for public Texas schools, meaning you won't use it. After you submit your primary (AMCAS), each school you applied to (if they deem you worthy) will contact you and send you a secondary application. These can range from a request for a check to 2 essays to 5 essays. In any case, the secondary is unique to each school. This system of secondary applications is also the norm in Canada.

does the quality of essays and stuff for secondaries play a pivotal role in admission to medical school?

They're pretty important if you're an average candidate. The majority of med school applicants look exactly the same on paper, so the essays and secondaries help you differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack.

did you volunteer at the hospital during the year or during summer??? I dont know how will i be able to manage it during the year, not free before 5 pm everyday, and hospitals aint open on weekends!!

I volunteered at a hospital the summer after my freshman year. Then I started working at a hospital from August 2003 to the present. I'll keep working there until I start med school.
