No, there was no miracle on University Blvd. I made a 75 on my Cell Bio final, giving me a C in the class. That means he did not curve the class or the final at all, even though he said he was going to. As understanding as liberal arts professors are, science professors are major jerks. No matter how much you try to build a relationship with them and let them into your life, they find new ways to disappoint you. The only exceptions to that I have seen are my female science professors, who actually do care about your personal life and how that can affect your performance in the course. They actually are willing to help you out. As for the rest of my science professors, they have all been jerks. My O Chem professor last term said he would drop a test, but he didn't. My Cell Bio professor this year said that he would curve the final grades, but he didn't. Science professors are just surrounded by heaps of broken promises, dreams, and hearts. They know how powerful they are in shaping your future, but they abuse it. Because of my experience with the science departments at SMU, I will no longer be taking science courses there. I have decided to drop my Biological Sciences major. I will complete the rest of my premed requirements at UTD, and I plan to take more upper level biology courses at CCCC. But the science professors I have had (except for the 2 nice ones I mentioned above) can all go f*** themselves.

Tonight was the season finale of The OC. It was so sad, and what's sadder is now I have to wait until September to see new episodes! It's always sad to have to take a break from a show that finally the whole family can watch together. My mom loves it more than I do! The dad (Sandy Coen, played by Mr. Too Cute for His Age Peter Gallagher) was on The View today, and she was screaming for me to get up and watch it. In honor of Cinco De Mayo, my mom and I went to lunch at the new branch of La Hacienda Ranch. I'm sorry to say that I was greatly disappointed. The new branch doesn't hold a candle to the original in Frisco or even Cozymel's. The fajitas were so small (just 2 strips of steak, which wasn't even steak: it was brisket!) and my mom's taco salad was nothing but lettuce. It was appalling! I don't think I'll be going there again, even if it does have a convenient location. The Frisco location is worth the trip.

Today was the start of Work Out Bootcamp 2004. The wedding is on the 29th. We started off with running for an hour. Then we came back and did 200 situps: 50 crunches, 50 crunches w/ legs in air, 50 right obliques, 50 left obliques. Finally, a little weight lifting was thrown in the mix. Tomorrow I'll be working all day, from 6:45 am to 5pm with just a Slim-Fast pasta to tide me over. I'm gonna look great for this wedding even if it kills me. The bad part is that a week before the wedding we'll be in Las Vegas, the land of buffets and the hot sun. It's very easy to come back to Dallas dark and fat, so I'm arranging a game plan now to counteract the downsides of vacation. I'll only swim early in the morning or late in the afternoon and I'll eat lots of healthy stuff. Let the pound-melting begin!

human physiology/exercise physiology will tell you that obtaining vo2 max is the best way to lose weight and achieve ideal metabolism. didnt you take those courses? they're required for pre-med studies here.

anyway.. once you get there, you can eat anything you want. i recommend uphill sprints and lunges paired with jump roping (cant spell that word). also swimming is incredible. try a thrice a week routine with all of those for a month. i guarentee you'll feel better even if (somehow) you dont lose weight.

but most importantly, do what makes you happy.

My school is actually the worse school for a premed to go to. We don't have any health science courses or any human biology courses. Almost every course is at the molecular level. gp, as always I appreciate your advice, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. My sisters and I have been begging my dad for a pool for that very reason. It's a great way for the entire family to promote a healthy lifestyle. But alas, financial and construction issues have placed that desire on the backburner. gp, I love how you always know exactly what you're talking about.

I think I did well on the Cell Bio exam (knock on wood). I study for 14 hrs, so hopefully it paid off. Surprisingly, the questions over the old material were pretty simple, while the questions over the new stuff were considerably harder. My professor told me that if I make an 83 I'll get a B-, maybe even B. Cross your fingers! So my summer begins today. Time to get wild and crazy the prettydoc way... (no, I don't know what that means either).

I just got an Email from my Brit Lit 2 professor. I got an A on the final and an A in the course! I'm so excited! I think I got an A in the exam I took today. Now all I have to do is study for my Cell Bio exam tomorrow and hopefully pull off a B-...after I watch Brad Pitt on Oprah (yum!).

60 Minutes just interviewed this Pakistani-British Muslim comedienne named Shazia Mirza. She does her stand-up wearing a scarf and her jokes center around poking fun at both Muslim and Western culture. Her jokes are very funny, mainly because she delivers them in a dry, deadpan style. She seems like a very nice lady, and hopefully we'll see more of her.

Today's the induction ceremony for Sigma Tau Delta, but I can't go for dos reasons:

Uno) The ceremony is at the casa of the an English professor (Dr. Sudan) who decided that it would be dandy to live in the middle of nowhere. I have no idea how to get there.

Dos) I have an English exam tomorrow and a Cell Bio exam Tuesday. It would be unwise to lose so much time at the induction.

Dos reasons why it's OK that I'm not there:

Uno) I don't have to attend the induction to join the club. I already paid my dues so I'm in.

Dos) My professor for the exam I have tomorrow is also my English advisor and the faculty advisor of STD (that cracks me up everytime!). However, she's been out of state since Friday and won't be back in town until Wednesday, so it's not like I'd be disappointing her. Part of why I wanted to go was to impress her a little, but if she's not there, who cares?

So while I'm glad to be in the National English Honor Society, I must regretfully decline my invitation to the induction in favor of study time.

I had a dream last night that I was having lunch at school with the usual people, and when we were done, Diego and I started walking to class as we usually do. There was some kind of construction so we took a detour, and we wound up in Meadows. We were at the Greer Garson theater, so we asked if Jenny was there so she could show us where to go so we could get to Hyer Hall. Well, Jenny wasn't there (cuz she has Wellness), so Diego and I started walking towards Hyer on our own. As we were walking, we noticed that the campus was sort of empty. Then we looked at each other and said, "Oh yeah! It's exam week! What are we doing here? We've gotta go home and study!" Gee, isn't it nice when your dreams are really fun and don't mirror real life at all?

OK, when I was online this picture popped up and said "Rate Me!" As you rate each person, you get to see another one. What I want to know is, how did they get a picture of me? What's going on here? :)

I finished my first exam. 1 down, 2 more to go. During the test 4 students went outside for "smoking breaks." Since when was this an acceptable test-taking practice? I thought it was unbelievable. I got my paper back with an A before I took the test, so I was thoroughly motivated to do well and not let my professor down. I really hope I aced this final. Here's the comment my professor left on the paper:

There are fine moments of analysis here, where your care in polishing your surfaces really brings your point across--above all, your attention to syntax and chiasmus in the closing lines. The ending seems a bit programmatic and dull. But otherwise, you've mastered this kind of analysis.

I don't want to study anymore! I'm tired, angry, hungry...Just stick everything negative there. I took a break today and went the Elephant Bar for lunch. I got the Barbeque Chicken Sandwich with no ham or bacon and a green salad side instead of fries. The sandwich had cheese and shoestring fried onions on it, which I had failed to notice. It's a one time caloric splurge, so I think I'll be able to recover from it. Then I went threading, which suddenly became a multicultural hotspot (who knew word was getting around about my little secret place?). When I was leaving a guy came in to get his eyebrows threaded. My mom asked the threader if that was a normal thing, and she said guys come in all the time for their eyebrows and to get their arms waxed. We were both a little surprised, but it's not really a big deal. The guy was cute, and I started thinking, "Maybe he's cute because he threads his eyebrows, hmm..."

Hmm, what did I do today? At work, I got to see pictures taken during a colonoscopy, like of the intestines etc. It was pretty cool and got me excited about anatomy. Can you believe it's been 2 years since I've seen the inside of an organism? Hopefully, I'll get to take Anatomy and Physiology at CCCC next year. I miss dissections and that's all you do in the lab. Some of my fondest memories are skinning the cat, scraping out its fat, and giving it a vasectomy. Ah, the good old days. Here kitty, kitty...
I watched Will and Grace today just to see J. Lo guest star. I'm not a fan of the show; I only saw it once before and that's because Matt Damon guest starred. I remember a time when my goal in life was to become Jennifer Lopez. Then she had to go and steal my man, Mr. Ben AFLAC (haha, that joke never gets old.) The thing was that they were my favorite celebrities independent of each other, but when they got together my celebrity world crashed to the ground, and I waited for the inevitable break up, but it took so damn long. The Jenny from the Block video just made me sick, the part where he kisses her ass and takes off her bikini top: gross!, ewww! The longer Bennifer went on the more fed-up I got with the both of them. The sight of either of them made me sick. The best part in tonight's Will and Grace was when Jack kicks J. Lo in the ass during their dance routine and then gets stuck in her crotch. Classic! Man, all this Lopez talk makes me want some tacos.

I went to a Cell Bio review today from 11-2:30. The whole thing was just the professor re-lecturing everything in the course. It was funny because as time went by students would slip out of the room. At the end there were only 10 of us left. I was like, can we get bonus points for staying? I stayed after the review and spoke to my professor about the status of my grade. I told him how badly I had to get a B- in his class. He told me I probably would have to make an 83 on the final on Tuesday. That scares me just because I've made C's on all the tests. Hopefully I'll be able to do it.

Isn't that the best title ever? I was just thinking, am I the only one who gets elated when I talk to my friends? affection for your friends? i don't see anything wrong with that. there doesn't have to be a romantic connotation with affection unless you want there to be. but neurolinguistics states (btw, that's what i'd love to get my phd in) that we associate affection with love because of previous connections we've made in our life. its like chaining the two together, so the next time we hear the word, out of context, it feels weird, we have to readjust and then move on. does that make sense? i dunno

Last night Fox 4 News did a special story on blogging that featured Blogger and included the famous blog, diary of a london call girl. Yesterday was my last day of school. It was bittersweet. I'm gonna miss the lounge and walking to classes w/ my friends and my Brit Lit 2 class. My Brit Lit professor came in and looked at the newspaper and said, "Oh, Estee Lauder died. She was 97." I was like, that's so cute! Once again, that crazy kid in our class came in the room and hit him hard twice on the back. OK, rule #1: Don't hit the teacher! So then the student said, "What's up, man?" and my professor said, "What's up with you...dude?" It was classic! Then the guy started talking about how he's just naturally happy b/c he's "high on life" and that even though he's probably gonna fail this class he's still happy. At which point, I mouthed my friend in the class, "He must have a rich daddy. That would make me happy too." Then I said, "Golly gee" out loud and my professor chuckled. He's so cute, I'm going to miss him. At least I'm taking Brit Lit 1 in the fall with him. Man, with all the nice things I'm saying about him he better give me an A. I registered for my UTD class today! All systems go.

Yesterday I completed my Airman essay and started my As You Like It, where I critique a literary critique (confusing, ain't it?). Tomorrow's the day when I turn them both in and take my last Developmental Psych test (no final, yay!). Last night I watched Almost Famous. It was a nice movie. I thought it would be all trippy and give me a headache, but it wasn't like that at all. The kid in it played really well, as did Francis McDormand as his mom. But I'm not too sure if Kate Hudson deserved that Oscar nom. Then I went to Snuffer's. It just opened by my house, so I thought I'd check it out. As a general rule, I order my steaks medium well and my burgers medium. Well, at Snuffer's the default is medium rare, so I asked for mine medium, while the rest of my family ordered it well done. My dad started talking to me about how I should have ordered well done, and I was like "whatever dad, I'm a rebel" (yes, that is the extent of my rebellion). Well, then my burger came, and it was BLEEDING! It was disgusting! So I sent it back and told them to cook it to well done. Of course, their well done was dry but at least I wasn't dying from E. Coli or Salmonella. So then I said, "You should always listen to your daddy," and that got a good laugh. So, Snuffer's isn't ranking that high on my list. But it is affordable and has a nice menu, so I may come again on my own. The best burger joint is still Fuddrucker's. Of course, the best burger that I've personally ever had is at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, LA, but who wants to drive that far? When I came home I watched Reindeer Games, with my fiance Ben Affleck and Oscar winner Charlize Theron. It was a nice movie, very exciting, but does Charlize have to get naked in every movie? Isn't she pretty enough on her own? It's not exactly like the role called for it.

Today I skipped lunch to go over my "Airman" draft with my professor (the one who wrote the book. Come on, you remember. Yes, that one.) He gave an awesome lecture today over the Waste Land. I feel so good when he speaks. As we went over the draft, he basically said that I'm not missing anything, but that I should add stuff to it. That's cool, I guess. But I really liked it when he liked things I said and that he had never thought of them before. Then he told me that I would make a great Yeatsian. I was so happy I just wanted to scream! See, my professor is a Modernist, although he also specializes in Queer Studies (I think he's the only one at my school who does), and absolutely loves Yeats. For him to say that I should be a Yeatsian is a HUGE compliment and an honor. As we went through my paper we started talking about other things: the US view of suicide bombers, heroic archetypes, Indo-European languages and how they have changed over time, etc. He even dropped the F-bomb a couple of times. It was great. I could just talk to him forever. He's so smart and I really feel like he understands me. I want to take Brit Lit 1 with him, so I told him that I want to request him to be my professor for section. He looked so happy and said, well Maryam you did so well in this class, I don't see why you won't do well in that one. Once again, I was beaming and didn't want to leave his desk. But alas, I had spent an entire hour talking to this great man and agreeing that he is my second favorite SMU professor of all time, although the first male professor. What a feeling!

Went to work and spent an extra hour there until my relief showed up. When I opened the door for him, I had this big grin on my face and said, "Now I can go home!" Then one of the receptionists said, "Oh, that's why you're so happy to see him. I thought there was something going on between you two." We were like, uhhhh ok. Some people were saying stuff like that during the scribe open house, but I think it's just cause the most recent intra-office romance is still on their mind (I wasn't involved in that or anything, but you get what I mean). But no, there's nothing going on between us. I'm a professional. I got my work schedule for May. I'm working 8 days, 13 shifts. That's 13x5x10=$650 in May alone. Awesome!

I got up at 9:10 today, so of course I would have been 15 min late to my 10 am so I skipped it and chilled in the lounge. I compared ring tones, planned a heist, and made sexual comments (Freud anyone?). Then I went to Cell Bio and on my way out, little miss "Stay out of my way" yells at me: "Oh my God, I love your hair. That is so f--in awesome." Um, ok, so it's awesome, as long as I "stay out of your way." Haha, I wonder how awesome she'd think it was if she knew what I was doing next. Today was the first day all year that I wasn't wearing jeans at school. I got some compliments for that (yes, I do have an a$$. It just gets hidden in the jeans.) Well, I skipped Brit Lit in order to go have lunch with 5 of my closest friends (I love you guys...oh and you girls too). It was 3 girls and 3 guys total, so we took seperate cars. I drove the girls in Silver Lightning and Diego drove the guys in the Blue Beast. I think the guys found my driving to be offensive. You see, I don't change lanes gradually. As soon as I turn on my blinker, I immediately go where I want to go and then shut the blinker off. Then there was the part at the end where I got into the wrong lane so I had to switch over right after the light to enter the shopping center. Hey, I had my blinker on so I thought I was doing good, but when I got in Diego's like "You almost started a pileup." Eh, looked safe to me; whatever (wow, I've just scared all of you and you'll never drive with me anywhere. WAA!). It was funny when Diego would start revving his engine. I was like, I don't know how to respond to that; I have a car horn? OK, so now you want to know: where did you eat, girl who can't drive? I took my buddies to a Persian buffet. (I know you weren't expecting that at all, were you?) The food was great (although, being Persian I've had better, but I have also had a hell of a lot worse). Persian restaurants are also usually expensive, but the buffet here is $7.99. Plus, it's the closest one to school, even though it's still 17 min. away. Ric was so cute: when he wanted water, he'd say "Can I have some ob?" (Ob is water). Then he went to the owner and said, "Merci" (thank you) and went to the cashier and said, "Great Doogh!" Doogh is a yogurt drink that none of the guys liked. It was funny cuz they were like, Ah that's nasty. But I love it. I think they liked everything else though, so it was a really cool day. Persian food + my 5 best friends = a totally awesome time that I won't forget.

According to Zach (or as I like to call him, Mr. Physics-Man), Vega is an uber-tough professor. Apparently in Physics 2, he passed 5 people and failed everyone else. What the hookie! Of course that was the Physics 2 for Engineers, not premeds, but I'm still just a tad bit wary of the fellow. Zach then informed me that he took Physics at UTD with Rasmussen and said it was "like having Barney teach you physics." Now I can't picture Barney failing anyone, can you? [Flashback: My sister dressed as Baby Bop every year for Halloween from 1992-1998. Can you believe it?] Plus, Carmen Rasmussen was the nicest finalist on American Idol, so Prof. Rasmussen has to be nice too. (Don't you just love the random connections my brain makes?) So, I'm thinking of taking Physics at UTD during the school year. That's MW 5:30-6:45pm, meaning no interference w/ my SMU schedule. I'll registered w/ Physics at SMU for now, and make up my mind after I take O Chem 2 at UTD. Sounds like a plan to me.

Hi everybody! At work today one of the scribes had to quit her post because she had to get to class. Since I don't have TA anymore, I gladly stepped in to do her work in addition to my own. Bottom Line: I saved the day! Trust me, it was more helpful than I'm making it sound. I always knew that I was a superhero. I got my O Chem Lab grade back. I'm listed under, what else?, prettydoc. I got a B- in the course. Eh, it'll become a B in the TMDSAS so I'm not sweating it too much. Besides, it's only a 1 hr class.

Guess what! I just got into Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society!!! This is so cool! Finally, my achievements in English are recognized, and on a national scale to boot! WOOHOO!!!!! So I can add my resume that my clubs are: Metro Mustangs (can I get woo woo!), National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and STD! Yes, it really is called STD for short. Ain't that a hoot?

I haven't done any homework since I got home. I went straight to watching TRL and then watching more videos online. Hanson was on TRL and they had tons of screaming fans. I got an email today about the 2nd Muslim PreMed Conference at UTSW. I went last year with my mom (it was on Mother's Day) and I learned a lot about admissions. The Muslim stuff they talked about wasn't really that great. Either it didn't apply to the way that I live my life or it was by certain people that I know are clueless. Well, this year they're trying something new. In addition to having the admissions committee from UTSW speak, they're also trying to reach out to the predents by also having the admissions committee from Baylor College of Dentistry speak. When I read that, I thought that that was really cool. Most of my friends are predent, my sister's predent, and my mom goes to Baylor for her dental work. So, I went to my mom and told her about the Baylor adcom being there this year. She immediately said that she did not want me to go into dentistry and that she'd be ashamed if I did. I said that I don't want to go into dentistry. So she asked why I cared that Baylor was gonna be there. I said that it was because my sister wanted to go there. My sister then said that she had changed her mind and wanted to go into business (?! ok, whatever). Then my mom kept prodding and I said that I don't know much about what the dental schools look for in applicants and I'm curious to know what they look for. Then I just walked away. I hate talking about this stuff with her because she's so quick to judge me. Then later on she was like, "Are you doubting going to med school again?" I was like, no I just want to keep my options open. She said, just concentrate on getting good grades so that you won't need to look at options; I don't want you to be a dentist. I just want to go off on her and say that my career choices are none of her business. I was the one who chose to be a doctor. I can also choose not to be. It doesn't make a difference. She's just so worried that if I don't be a doctor (specifically, going to UTSW on my first try) she'll be the laughing stock of the Dallas Iranian community. It's all because my cousin went to UTSW (hello, she was waitlisted!) and is now a resident at the hospital where I work. She got a nosejob last month and I see her flirt with this resident all the time. My mom's always talking about how now she can have whatever she wants because she's reached her goals. So I have to swear off everything until I have too. Oh God, it's like she doesn't get it at all. My future has nothing to do with anybody else. It's my life and my choices. When she talks like this, I get discouraged because I feel so much pressure. If I was rebellious I would give up on being a doctor, except that it's my dream, not hers. I would be stupid to give up on something that I want because of somebody else, just like I don't want to achieve it because of somebody else. I just wish that she would stay out of it. I need her support, not to be a doctor, but to be what I want to be.

I just got back from the Scribe Open House at work. It was a huge success! We had 20 people show up, and everything went off without a hitch. The premed advisor was there too, so she saw that I wasn't a complete loser. I was in charge of showing the applicants how to do a preoperative consult. They were all like, "Wow, Maryam, you're so good. We had no idea you knew how to do this stuff." The doctor and my boss all said I did a good job too, so I was thoroughly beaming with pride at a job well done. All except 2 of the applicants were from my school, so I knew most of them. I can't wait until training starts in summer. It's gonna be fun taking someone under my wing and teaching them the craft. OOO, I'm so excited!!

Today was my Organic Chemistry Lab final. I actually don't think I did that bad, but I'm sure I lost plenty of points. If I missed everything I'm not sure about, I wind up with a B+ on the final. I got so excited when I got my last 2 lab reports back and I got A's on them. Today at work we were getting ready for the Open House tomorrow. So far we have 10 people RSVP. I looked at the list and, well, I don't like some of the people applying. Eh, what can you do? I think they're going to be surprised that I have this job when they see me at the open house. They're those gunner premed types, which I'm not (even though I may sound like one on my blog). Nobody likes a gunner premed. I brought one of my mix CDs in to school today, mainly so Jenny could listen to "What's your fantasy?". I got some good use out of it; everybody loves a mix CD. I really just wanted to have fun during lunch, but instead my predental friends kept me centered on studying for the lab final. Not that there weren't plenty of distractions (spitwads, anyone?).

Yesterday was my last day to TA...ever! Triple WOOHOO!!!! The Persian guy in my class went from bugging me all semester to suddenly being my new best friend. I was like, Dude what's your deal? He was being really nice to me and then I found out why. He wanted me to overlook some missing pages on his lab report (yes, he was missing whole pages) in order to boost his grade. I was like, No way Jose! He, of course, got less friendly after that. Eh, who cares? Today was nice until I got my Cell Bio test back. Yes, it was the Spirit of 76, meaning of course that I got a 76. The class average was 79, which he was unexpicably happy about. That's not a good class average, but he was milking it like it was, thereby refusing a curve. Um, ok, now what am I supposed to do, genius? I'm gonna have to meet w/ him later and figure something out. BTW, any premeds reading this in the Dallas area: we're having an open house at work (Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas) to recruit new scribes. It's this Friday from 2-5 pm. I liked the response to my haircut. I'm satisfied, haha. I was surprised by the number of guys that acknowledged it. Usually guys don't notice this sort of stuff, in my experience. My Cell Bio test went pretty well. One of the things my professor said that I should do is ask him about the question if I have any doubt as to its meaning. So I asked him on 2 of the questions, and he practically gave me the answer! All right!! The next test coming up is the Organic Chemistry Lab Final on Thursday. The studying starts now.

So I went threading today. I don't know why I feel the need to announce that, but I do. It was in anticipation of the people coming over tonight. Yes, they are the ones I spent last Saturday cleaning for. And no, they're not worth it. The threading hurt more today than it usually does. Maybe I waited too long, maybe the lady did it badly, maybe my skin is crazy...Wow, this is really boring. I read the Awakening in one day (140 pages baby!) and read some WWI poetry. So, I've been spending today studying for my Cell Bio exam on Monday. I've been typing my notes because they make no sense in my notebook. I've already typed out the notes for Microtubules, Intermediate filaments, and cell transport. Once I do cell signals, I'll be free to just read over everything continuously.

Tonight I watched Something's Gotta Give. It was a funny move, just a little on the long and slow side. I'm absolutely in love with Keanu Reeves's character. He's everything that I want in a man. Everything he did was so...perfect. I hope one day I'm lucky enough to find someone like him. That scene where Diane Keaton is on the phone and he just looks at her...you can just see the love pounding in his heart and the norepinephrine and serotonin transmitting through his neurons. When he passed her the note on his prescription stationary, I thought I was going to melt. Wow, he's exactly what I want.

I got a haircut today! It's a shoulder-length, layered bob. The best part of having layers are the flirty, little pieces that get in your face and play with your eyes. Having a bob makes me feel so spunky. My sisters also got hair cuts, and one of my sisters got her license, too. I've been spending the day reading "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin. At the moment, I'm having an awakening of my own. It's the classic "art imitates life," I suppose. What happens if what you awaken to is so dangerous you'd rather stay asleep?

They found it! One of the biggest mysteries in aviation is finally solved. I've read The Little Prince in the original French in 1998, when I was in 8th grade. It's such a cute, little book with a nice message.

If I recall correctly. I postulated that the flower was a negative image because it was not free to roam about like the travellers. Which was in direct confrontation to my professor's own theroy that the flower was the ultimate in happiness since it belonged somewhere/ had an undisputed home.

Today was Middle Eastern day at my school, so we had some special guests: Bellydancers! They came all the way from...Hurst Recreation Center. No, none of these women were professionals or, incidentally, of MidEastern descent, but that doesn't mean they're bad. Let's give them a chance. So I did, and, well, while they weren't bad, they weren't particularly good either. They were 3 women, 3 overweight, older women. And yes, they decided that it was fine to expose their jelly, I mean bare midriff. They moved too slowly, as it appeared they were unable to keep up with the rhythm of the song. Their method of dance did not seem to come from a particular country. It turns out the style was "San Francisco" style, meaning some American thought she could make big bucks by conning housewives out of their dough and teaching them pseudo-stripping. At the end of their performance, they invited audience members to dance with them. I was fine where I was, but one of the girls organizing the event pulled my friend and I up to join in. I played along with the dancers, who were "teaching" me moves. They starting saying things like, "Wow, you're a natural. Are you sure you haven't done this before?" I just played the "beginner's luck" card. Everytime my friend and I tried to sneak away, that girl would pull us back in. Weirdo! We finally got away and got to go back w/ our other friends. It was time to go to class, but a new set of dancers arrived. One of them was an extremely hot young girl (she turned out to be 16). All the guys stared bug-eyed at this hottie in a Princess Jasmine costume, while we girls were debated whether or not her boobs were real. One of the guys said something really funny, but I'm not gonna embarrass him. I missed her show, but one of the guys later told me that she sucked so people started laughing at her, and she left. Haha, too bad I missed it.

So I went to work, which was fine. Then I head to school, where it was "East Asia meets South Asia" day. My coworker that I drive to school wanted to check it out so we headed over there. She's a member of the Indian Student Association, so she knew most of the people there. There was this guy at the ISA talent show that everybody thought was really hot, and he was at the India booth today! I was like, omg what a hottie! He looks like David Ackert, who I think is a beautiful man. Then, my coworker told me that he's a junior and Muslim and I was like, ooh, this is getting better and better. Hehe. So then my friend and I headed to lab to TA. One of our students came up to us along the way and said, "Haven't you heard? The professor is sick, so all labs are canceled this week. There's a note on the door." Since the student was trustworthy (there's a certain somebody in there that I don't trust at all), my friend and I were pretty glad to be off the hook and headed home. I took Central, which was scary, and I never want to do it again. From now on, Hillcrest or Preston, baby!

So the crazy guy in my English class decided that he wanted to sit next to me and proceeded to go on about how much he loves the 80s and wants to do the Electric Slide with me. Um, yeah. So then we had just gone over "Sailing to Byzantium" and were about to start "Prufrock" (my favorite poem in the world). At that precise moment, the guy decides to open his big fat mouth and say that there is no point to studying "Sailing to Byzantium"; the poem serves no purpose. OMG, this is an English class; you study poetry! That's the purpose! So the professor was, of course, just rubbing his face thinking, "What have I done with my life?" I feel so bad for him that he has to deal with this guy. He really cringes when he enters the room. So then the professor was asking everyone who was reading Prufrock for the first time what their impressions were. OK, the thing is, Prufrock is not a poem that can be understood when you read it once. It took me 1-2 years of intense study before I could even begin to crack the surface. My professor is a specialist in Modernism, so he had studied this poem many times and wanted to hear a fresh perspective. Of course, none of the new readers had anything to say. So we sat in silence as the professor kept firing questions to the new readers. Finally, I just got fed up with the silence (keep in mind there is only 5 min. left in class) and just started answering all his questions. He was surprised I had so much to say about the first few lines. We ended class without even finishing the first 1/2 of the first stanza. Wednesday we're going to have a lecture on it, so that means no more discussion on Prufrock. Waaa!! Curse the crazy guy and the way he wastes our time. It turns out that he's not a history major. He's majoring in International Relations and minoring in History. Well, either way he's wacko. In other news, I walked into the lounge today and had a funny feeling in my chest. No, it wasn't a heart attack. Apparently a bug decided to make itself at home in my bra. That's right, in my bra. It just started tugging at my shirt and people were looking at me, so I headed over the bathroom, pulled it out, and squished it in victory. I felt so violated; the last thing I need is to be felt up by a bug. In other other news, I registered today, but now I have some doubts. OK, let's have a vote for the 2 classes I'm torn between:

I'm sick again. This sucks. I think I have allergies, so I picked up some Claritin (well, the generic version). For some reason, I feel worse. Oh please don't let this be a cold! I register for my classes tomorrow. I decided to take Plant Kingdom instead of Russian Culture. I heard it's an easy class, so the 4 hrs of "A" should really boost my science GPA since I won't have time to take any Bio classes at CCCC. I will, however, take Nutrition online at CCCC during the summer while I'm taking O Chem 2 at UTD so that's 3 hrs of "A" that will help a bit. Every A counts. That's my new philosophy for next year. I'm taking classes that I know I can maximize my A's in. So the new and improved Fall 2004 schedule is:

Last night, I saw a little movie that I had never heard of before. Oh my gosh, it was so good! That is to say, it was hilarious. It's called Unconditional Love. It stars SMU alumna and Oscar winner Kathy Bates and my favorite gay Briton, the lovely Mr. Rupert Everett. It's also got Dan Akroyd, Johnathan Pryce, and special appearances by Julie Andrews, Barry Manilow, and Sally Jessie Raphael. It was so funny!! You know I hadn't noticed this before, but my aforementioned English professor looks like Rupert Everett, except my professor has kinder eyes and wears tighter pants.

Speaking of geniuses, there is one poem that calls to me. This poem was my initiation into the realm of poetry and critical literary theory. I first read it when I was a junior in high school. Today was a cleaning day. I was up at 9:30 and cleaning up till 12. Why, do you ask? Because next Saturday (yes, a week from today) people are coming over. No, not relatives or special people. Isn't Britney a lyrical genius?

Tonight I saw "Dirty Pretty Things." It was a great movie that describes events in the lives of multicultural immigrants in England. Audrey Tautou of Amelie fame plays a Turkish girl whose life is manipulated by the system in which she is trapped. I loved it. You should see it; I highly recommend it.

Today in class, someone asked my English prof what college he went to. He replied that he got his bachelor's at Princeton. Just as he had begun lecture, this guy in our class (known as the one who says constantly stupid comments, so everyone hates him) comes up behind the prof, hits him on the back twice, and sits down in front of me. The prof and the class were in shock. The prof continued (he's such a sweet guy) and the crazy student (who my friend said reeked of alcohol) kept making stupid comments in class. I think he's a history major (not that I'm saying that has anything to do with his intelligence) because he starting going off on the history of warfare in America. The thing was, we were talking about Ireland. What planet is he on? He started asking what words meant that had footnotes, and he was asking about words in poems that we were not discussing at the time. At one point the prof asked him a question and he said that he wasn't listening. Plus he kept laughing throughout class. Finally, as we're about to leave, the guy asks, "Prof, how do you know all this stuff? Do you have a cheat sheet that comes with your textbook?" The prof just stares at him and says, "I have a Ph.D." Damn, this guy is psycho. My prof is actually he really cool guy who doesn't deserve that at all. He's even written a book.

prof is indeed a word, in French. But in every other language it seems to be a titular abbriviation, like Mrs or Mr.. So in order to continue using it (properly) you would need to preceed a persons name with it. Of course you could always update in french and then I couldnt argue the point any further.
Otherwise, help stop the destruction of the english language. its these grey areas between ebonics and english that are most dangerous, since people dont even think about what they are saying,.

OK, here's the email I sent the premed advisor at my school:

I hope you are doing well. I know that this is a busy time of year for you, but I was hoping you could give me some advice. Last term, I made a C in O Chem 1 and a B in the lab. I had difficulty with Organic Chemistry 2 this semester (my test scores were 60, 65, and 50). Thus I dropped the course and want to retake it this summer at another campus. I am an English major and a Pre-MD. I am also currently a BA Biological Sciences major, but I am considering changing that to a minor. Therefore, this class is unnecessary for my majors, so transferring the course to SMU is a non-issue. I want to take O Chem 2 at either UTD or Collin County Community College. UTD offers it as an 8 week session, while CCCC offers it as a 6 wk Summer 2 session. I feel more confident that I could make an A at CCCC, but I don't know how it would look to a med school adcom if I took this course at a CC. Do you think that UTD or CCCC would be a better choice for me?

Here's her reply:

You may want to think carefully about the Organic Chemistry and reasons why it didn't seem to go well. There may be some questions about taking it over the summer, no matter where you do so since you dropped the class this term. Are you taking another science? What is your Math/Science GPA? I would recommend a four year school at this point, but the grade you plan to earn is only one issue. I think you will need to clearly demonstrate the ability to handle a challenging academic schedule -- demonstrate to yourself and to an admission committee. This is busy, but let's see if we might find some time to talk during the week of the 15th of April.

Um, thanks for wasting my time, lady. I hate premed advisors. They're good for nothing. All I wanted to know was UTD or CCCC. Instead she had to drag it out and make it into something it's not. I don't want to talk to her. All she'll do is tell me I'm stupid and should give up my dreams. It's a strategy she's famous for. She gets everybody to drop premed so that the school will have a high acceptace rate to med school. Last year 8 students applied and 6 got in. She was able to wittle 150 premeds to 8. It's all a huge scam my school is running. I don't trust this lady. I'm going to consider her email as a vote for UTD and move on.

Happy April Fool's Day, everybody! This morning when I got to work I found out that the tough doctor was off so my co-scribe and I got to scribe for the my favorite one. Yea! I was with my buddydoc and I got to talk to my co-scribe when the doc was in with patients. I hate being lonely, but this time I had a friend to while away the time with. Double Yea! Then I got to school. Today I stopped having Slim Fast pasta and moved to the soups. Mmmm Yumsters! The funny thing was, the soup filled me up more than the pastas did. Usually I have a salad with the pasta, but I didn't eat one with my soup because I was so full. And I had even skipped my midmorning snack! You know what that means: my tummy is getting smaller! Triple yea! Everybody was nice to me today. Quadruple Yea! I made nylon in Organic Lab. The last Organic Chemistry lab I will ever have in my life. Quintuple Yea!
